Gadsden City 64, Clay-Chalkville 59 (3 OT)        Birmingham News, February 12, 2009 9:56 p.m.
Gadsden City and Clay-Chalkville battled even through the second half and the first two overtimes before the host Titans outscored the Cougars 8-3 in the third overtime to claim their Class 6A Northeast subregional win. Cody Paulk had 23 points and 10 rebounds for Gadsden City (24-4) while Jocelyn Madden scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Ebony Crum had 10 points. Clay-Chalkville, the 2008 Class 6A state runner-up, was led by Alexa Butler's 18 points, Lauren Baxter's 13 points and Alex Strickland's 11 points.

Clay-Chalkville 66, Pinson Valley 44              Birmingham News, February 05, 2009 7:12 p.m.
Alex Strickland scored a game-high 25 points to lead Clay-Chalkville to a 66-44 win against Pinson Valley on Thursday in the first round of the Class 6A, Area 14 tournament.   Clay outscored Huffman 32-11 in the second and third quarter combined thanks to some accurate outside shooting by Mallorie Grissom. She finished with 12 points and made three 3-pointers in the third quarter for Clay (26-6) while Emily Landers added 11 points. Sisters Alexa and Lauren Baxter each had eight points for the Cougars.

Pinson (10-18) trailed 51-24 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Indians finally caught fire in the fourth. They outscored Clay 20-15 in the last quarter. Kasey McKinney led Pinson with 18 points while Hope Woods added 17.

 

Clay-Chalkville 57, Minor 46      Birmingham News, January 03, 2009 11:39 p.m.
Lauren and Alexa Baxter combined for 30 points as host Clay-Chalkville advanced to Monday morning's Metro Jeffco Tournament semifinals. Lauren Baxter scored 16 points while sister Alexa had 14 points for the third-ranked Class 6A Cougars (18-1).

Clay-Chalkville 62, McAdory 38     Birmingham News, January 02, 2009 7:53 p.m.
Class 6A third-ranked Clay sprinted to a 12-0 lead, keyed by three straight baskets from 3-point range and was never threatened during first round action at Friday's Metro Jeffco girls basketball tournament.

The Cougars (17-1) converted 12 baskets from 3-point range in the game, led by three 3-pointers each from Chelsea Graham and Savannah White. Graham led all scorers with 13 points while White added 11 and Alexa Baxter contributed 10.

Clay-Chalkville 56, Lawrence County 45    Birmingham News, December 29, 2008 10:28 p.m.
Lauren Baxter and Alex Strickland each scored 16 points as Clay-Chalkville (15-0) defeated Lawrence County in the quarterfinals of the River City Classic in Decatur. Nakia McDainel led Lawrence (12-3) with a game-high 25 points.

Clay-Chalkville 79, Ardmore 43    Birmingham News, December 27, 2008 9 p.m.
Clay-Chalkville got off to a fast start in girls high school action behind senior Alex Strickland on the way to recording a state-record 19 baskets from 3-point range in first round action at Decatur's River City Classic.  Strickland scored 13 of her 19 points in the first period, including three of Class 6A third-ranked Clay's six baskets from 3-point range.  "Alex Strickland really sparked us at the start," said Clay coach Mike Chase. "Everybody just fed off that."

Clay (14-0) connected on 11 3-pointers in the first half and added six more in the third quarter.  The Cougars broke Butler's 3-point record of 17 in the first game of the season, nailing 18 against Vestavia Hills, but upped the record to 19 on Saturday.  Lauren Baxter and Strickland each scored 19 for Clay while Savannah White added 15 and Chelsea Graham scored 11.

Clay-Chalkville 50, Ramsay 39    Birmingham News, December 18, 2008 9:42 p.m.
Class 6A third-ranked Clay earned the win over Class 4A top-ranked Ramsay behind balanced socring from three seniors.  Alex Strickland led the Cougars (13-0) with 15 points while Emily Landers added 13 and Lauren Baxter scored 11.

Lauren Baxter and Alex Strickland each scored 15 points while Emily Landers had 11 points for third-ranked Class 6A Clay-Chalkville (12-0).

Clay-Chalkville 65, Gadsden City 54   Birmingham News, December 15, 2008 10:38 p.m.
Sophomore guard Chelsea Graham scored a school-record 38 points in her first varsity game as Clay-Chalkville remained perfect on the season at 11-0 with a victory over visiting Gadsden City (9-2). She hit seven 3-pointers in the game. Alex Strickland added 10 points for the winners.

Clay-Chalkville 60, Mountain Brook 47   Birmingham News--David Morrison, December 13, 2008 7:13 p.m.
Even though it fell behind by as many as 10 points in the first half, a constant barrage of 3-pointers helped Clay-Chalkville pull even and then away from Mountain Brook in a 60-47 girls high school victory Saturday.  The Cougars buried 13 shots from behind the arc in their road win over the Spartans.   Alex Strickland and Savannah White combined to sink 10 of those shots. Strickland led Clay (10-0) with 22 points and nine rebounds. White, playing in her first varsity game, had 12 points.   "We were just getting the ball around the horn," Strickland said. "At first we were making some lazy passes. But during the second half we got a lot more zip underneath them, which opened up a lot of shots for us."

The Cougars, ranked No. 3 in Class 6A, trailed the Spartans (6-2) by two at the half, then outscored Mountain Brook 12-3 in the third quarter to take the lead.  Mountain Brook, ranked No. 6 in 6A, managed only 13 points in the second half.   "The first half, we were playing lazy," Strickland said. "After we went into halftime and Coach (Mike) Chase gave us a little (chewing out), we started getting in passing lanes, boxing out and being a lot more physical."

Strickland also drew the assignment of guarding 6-foot Spartans post player Zan Morgan throughout the game. Morgan finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, the only Mountain Brook player to crack double figures. She finished 6-of-15 from the field.  "She's got four inches on me and she's a great athlete," Strickland said. "I just had to play tough with her. She can jump higher than I can, she's taller than I am. So the more physical I am, it's better for me." Leslie Boozer and Lane Tucker each had nine points for the Spartans, with Tucker adding six assists. Tessa Harmon pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with her four points.   Alexa Baxter had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars, and Lauren Baxter had nine points, five assists and four steals.

Clay-Chalkville 55, Pinson Valley 38  Birmingham News, December 12, 2008 10:20 p.m.
Emily Landers had 16 points, Alex Strickland scored 15 points and Lauren Baxter had 13 points for third-ranked Class 6A Clay-Chalkville (9-0), which led 31-16 at halftime. Alganist Gatson had 15 points and Hope Woods had 14 points for visiting Pinson Valley (7-4).

Clay-Chalkville 45, Huffman 38   Birmingham News, December 09, 2008 10:27 p.m.
Clay-Chalkville stayed perfect on the season at 8-0 with a win on the road at Huffman. Alex Strickland led Clay-Chalkville with 23 points and Lauren Baxter added 18. Huffman (3-6) was led by Gerlinda Jackson with 13 and Jessica Burge with 12.

Clay-Chalkville 30, Midfield 25   Birmingham News, December 06, 2008 12:10 a.m.
Visiting Clay-Chalkville upped its record to 7-0 with a victory over Midfield (7-2). Lauren Baxter led Clay-Chalkville with 11 points and Lakenya Lowe led Midfield with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Brittany Young grabbed 13 rebounds for Midfield.

Clay-Chalkville 57, Shades Valley 55   Birmingham News, December 02, 2008 10:39 p.m.
Emily Landers' layup with 18 seconds left gave third-ranked Clay-Chalkville its Class 6A, Area 13 victory over ninth-ranked Shades Valley.  Landers' final points in a 24-point game broke a 55-all deadlock. Landers' seven second-quarter points helped give the visiting Cougars (6-0, 1-0) a 30-24 halftime lead. Lauren Baxter scored 12 points and Alex Strickland had 10 points for Clay-Chalkville. Morganne Phillips had 20 points and Shamonte Lanfair scored 15 points for Shades Valley (5-1, 0-1). Sandra Sturdivant grabbed 16 rebounds.

Clay-Chalkville 45, Pelham 37   Birmingham News, November 26, 2008 9:23 p.m.
The Cougars blew a 20-8 halftime lead, but rebounded in the fourth quarter, outscoring the tournament host Panthers 20-8, to claim the Pelham Girls Thanksgiving Shootout title. Emily Landers led Clay-Chalkville with 12 points. Melanie Short and Ally Slaughter paced Pelham with 10 points each.

Clay-Chalkville 48, Parker 43   Birmingham News, November 25, 2008 11:34 p.m.
Clay-Chalkville rallied in the fourth quarter to outscore Parker 20-9 and win in the Pelham Thanksgiving Tournament. Emily Landers led Clay-Chalkville with 18 points and Lauren Baxter had 11. Kenesha Watkins led Parker with 32 points.  Clay-Chalkville and Pelham will play at 2:30 p.m. today in the championship round. In other games, Walker and Thompson play at 10 a.m.. Hewitt-Trussville and Vestavia Hills play at 11:30 a.m. Gardendale and Parker will meet at 1 p.m.

Clay-Chalkville 60, Thompson 31   Birmingham News, November 22, 2008 10:55 p.m.
The Cougars (3-0) sprinted to a 23-8 halftime lead and were never threatened in the first round of the Pelham Thanksgiving Tournament. Lauren Baxter led Clay with 19 points while Natasha Barckley added 10.   Ashley Wilson paced Thompson (1-4) with 10 points.  In other action from the tournament, Parker downed Vestavia Hills 51-36, Gardendale beat Walker 60-35 and host Pelham downed Hewitt-Trussville 66-43.

Clay-Chalkville 56, Hoover 55   Birmingham News, November 20, 2008 10:43 p.m.
Lauren Baxter's free throw with no time left on the clock was the difference in the game. Baxter had driven the lane and missed, but got her own rebound and was fouled to set up the game winner for the Cougars (2-0).  Baxter led all scorers with 25 points, while Alexa Baxter added 11. Jazmine Martin led Hoover (2-2) with 20 points, while Meghan Dunn had 14 points and Kanesha Burch had 10.

Clay-Chalkville 80, Vestavia Hills 53, November 13, 2008 9:35 p.m.

Clay-Chalkville hit a school-record 18 3-pointers as the Cougars downed Vestavia Hills in the season opener for both teams.  Emily Landers and Alex Strickland each made four 3-pointers while Lauren and Alexa Baxter each had three. Strickland finished with 20 points while Lauren Baxter had 16 and Alexa Baxter 13. Landers finished with 12 points.  Bridget Williams led Vestavia Hills with 17 points and Jennifer Bragg added 12.
