battled even through the second half
and the first two overtimes before
the host Titans outscored the
Cougars 8-3 in the third overtime to
claim their Class 6A Northeast
subregional win. Cody Paulk had 23
points and 10 rebounds for Gadsden
City (24-4) while Jocelyn Madden
scored 17 points and grabbed 10
rebounds and Ebony Crum had 10
points. Clay-Chalkville, the 2008
Class 6A state runner-up, was led by
Alexa Butler's 18 points, Lauren
Baxter's 13 points and Alex
Strickland's 11 points.

Alex Strickland scored a game-high
25 points to lead Clay-Chalkville to
a 66-44 win against Pinson Valley on
Thursday in the first round of the
Class 6A, Area 14 tournament.
Clay outscored Huffman 32-11 in the
second and third quarter combined
thanks to some accurate outside
shooting by Mallorie Grissom. She
finished with 12 points and made
three 3-pointers in the third
quarter for Clay (26-6) while Emily
Landers added 11 points. Sisters
Alexa and Lauren Baxter each had
eight points for the Cougars.
Pinson (10-18) trailed 51-24 heading
into the fourth quarter, but the
Indians finally caught fire in the
fourth. They outscored Clay 20-15 in
the last quarter. Kasey McKinney led
Pinson with 18 points while Hope
Woods added 17.

behind senior Alex Strickland on the
way to recording a state-record 19
baskets from 3-point range in first
round action at Decatur's River City
Classic. Strickland scored 13
of her 19 points in the first
period, including three of Class 6A
third-ranked Clay's six baskets from
3-point range. "Alex
Strickland really sparked us at the
start," said Clay coach Mike Chase.
"Everybody just fed off that."
Clay (14-0) connected on 11
3-pointers in the first half and
added six more in the third quarter.
The Cougars broke Butler's 3-point
record of 17 in the first game of
the season, nailing 18 against
Vestavia Hills, but upped the record
to 19 on Saturday. Lauren
Baxter and Strickland each scored 19
for Clay while Savannah White added
15 and Chelsea Graham scored 11.

difference in the game. Baxter had
driven the lane and missed, but got
her own rebound and was fouled to
set up the game winner for the
Cougars (2-0). Baxter led all
scorers with 25 points, while Alexa
Baxter added 11. Jazmine Martin led
Hoover (2-2) with 20 points, while
Meghan Dunn had 14 points and
Kanesha Burch had 10.
Clay-Chalkville 80, Vestavia Hills 53,
Clay-Chalkville hit a school-record 18 3-pointers as the Cougars downed Vestavia Hills in the season opener for both teams. Emily Landers and Alex Strickland each made four 3-pointers while Lauren and Alexa Baxter each had three. Strickland finished with 20 points while Lauren Baxter had 16 and Alexa Baxter 13. Landers finished with 12 points. Bridget Williams led Vestavia Hills with 17 points and Jennifer Bragg added 12.
