Coker Resigns Unexpectedly
Written by David Murray, Clay News

First year Clay-Chalkville boys’ basketball coach Robi Coker resigned March 3rd, after just one season as the Cougars’ bench boss. The move surprised many around the basketball program, who saw a major improvement in the team’s performance this past season.

“He did a wonderful job this past year and we hate to see him go,” said athletic director Brent Smith. “We had some big wins toward the end of the season and the program was definitely headed in the right direction.”

Coker was candid about his lone season at CCHS. He understood the task of building a program that has always struggled, but believed it could be done.

“I resigned because it was in the best interest of the CCHS program and in the best interest of my family,” said Coker. “Our kids worked their tails off and deserve the support of everyone here at Clay-Chalkville. It wasn’t an easy decision, but one that I trust will make this a stronger program in the near future.”

Coker told Clay News that the adversity that he and his team faced throughout the season was difficult on the coaching staff and his players. The adversity he was referring to was three players who transferred to CCHS from Birmingham area schools, but were later ruled ineligible.

“It is not like I am leaving CCHS for another job,” said Coker. “I am grateful to this place, which gave me the opportunity to be a head coach. Hopefully, I have helped get this program on the road toward a successful future. I have made many friends along the way and it’s been tough saying goodbye.”

Smith said he has already advertised for the coaching vacancy; however he and Principal Steve Laney would not get in a hurry to make a decision on Coker’s replacement. Coker is the third head coach to leave Clay-Chalkville within the last 12 months. The other two were softball coach C.J. Hawkins and football coach John Holladay.
